How GPA is Calculated
GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated by multiplying the grade points for each course by the number of credit hours, summing those values, and dividing by the total number of credit hours.
Formula: GPA = (Sum of (Grade Points × Credits)) ÷ (Total Credits)
For example, if you get an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course: (4.0 × 3 + 3.3 × 4) ÷ (3 + 4) = (12 + 13.2) ÷ 7 = 3.60
Most US colleges and universities use the 4.0 scale. Some high schools offer weighted GPAs for honors and AP courses, which can go above 4.0.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is GPA calculated?
GPA = (Sum of (Grade Points × Credits)) ÷ (Total Credits). Each letter grade corresponds to a point value on the 4.0 scale, and courses with more credits carry more weight.
What is a 4.0 GPA scale?
A=4.0, A-=3.7, B+=3.3, B=3.0, B-=2.7, C+=2.3, C=2.0, C-=1.7, D+=1.3, D=1.0, F=0.0. This is the standard unweighted scale used by most US colleges.
What's the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA caps at 4.0 regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds extra points (typically +0.5 for honors, +1.0 for AP/IB) and can exceed 4.0. This calculator uses unweighted.
